Dear W Journal,
Life has a way of presenting us with seasons of change. Sometimes these transitions are planned and exciting, such as starting a new job or moving to a new home. Other times they arrive unexpectedly, like the end of a relationship or a sudden shift in circumstances. Regardless of how they unfold, significant life changes can challenge our sense of stability and leave us feeling uncertain about what comes next.
It's easy to underestimate the impact that major transitions can have on our wellbeing. While change can create opportunities for growth and new experiences, it can also bring stress, grief, fear, and self-doubt. Even positive changes require adjustment, and it is important to recognise that feeling overwhelmed during periods of transition is a natural human response.
One of the most common mistakes we make during times of change is believing that we need to have everything figured out immediately. We put pressure on ourselves to know exactly what the future looks like, how we will manage every challenge, and when we will start feeling settled again. The reality is that change often asks us to become comfortable with uncertainty. Growth rarely happens when everything is predictable and familiar.
Whether you are changing careers, relocating to a new city, or navigating the end of a relationship, it is important to give yourself permission to process the experience. There may be moments of excitement and optimism, followed by periods of sadness, anxiety, or frustration. These emotions can coexist, and acknowledging them without judgement is an important part of maintaining emotional wellness.
During times of transition, self-care becomes less about luxury and more about necessity. Simple daily habits can provide a sense of grounding when everything else feels uncertain. Prioritising sleep, movement, nourishing food, time in nature, and meaningful connections can help regulate both the mind and body. These practices may seem small, but they create a foundation of resilience that allows us to navigate change with greater ease.
Another powerful wellness practice during major life changes is focusing on what remains within your control. While we cannot control the outcome of every situation, we can control our response. We can choose how we speak to ourselves, how we spend our time, and how we show up each day. Small, intentional actions often create momentum when larger goals feel overwhelming.
Mindset also plays a significant role in how we experience change. Instead of viewing transitions solely as losses, we can begin to see them as opportunities for reinvention. A career change may open doors to a more aligned purpose. A move may introduce new relationships and experiences. A breakup, while painful, can create space for healing, self-discovery, and personal growth.
This does not mean ignoring the challenges or pretending everything is positive. Rather, it means trusting that difficult seasons can also be transformative. Often, it is only when we look back that we realise the periods we feared most were the ones that shaped us in the most meaningful ways.
Wellness during times of change is not about having all the answers. It is about learning to trust yourself through uncertainty. It is about creating moments of calm amidst chaos, extending yourself grace when things feel difficult, and remembering that every transition is temporary.
Life will continue to evolve, and change will always be part of the journey. By approaching these moments with self-compassion, resilience, and an open mind, we give ourselves the best opportunity not only to survive change, but to grow because of it.
Love you, Love me.
