How to Shake Off the Holiday Blues (and Actually Have Fun Doing It)

Dear Wellness Journal,

The holidays are over, the decorations are packed away, reality hits - your back to work, and suddenly the excitement and your freedom has vanished. It’s normal to feel a little low after all the celebrations, what some call the post-holiday blues. But the good news is, there are simple ways to bring your energy, joy, and motivation back, and you can even have fun doing it!

  1. Move Your Body (And Make It Fun)

Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. Dance around your kitchen to your favourite songs, try a fun online workout, or go for a walk outside and play with the fresh air. Movement not only boosts endorphins but also reminds your body that you’re alive and ready for new adventures. Even 10–15 minutes of playful movement can lift your mood.

  1. Brighten Your Space

A tidy, fresh environment can do wonders for your mind. Swap out holiday décor for something uplifting, change the furniture around in your room, bring in a few house plants, or even just open your windows and let the light in. Your surroundings have a bigger impact on your emotions than you might think, a small refresh can feel like hitting the reset button.

  1. Indulge in Mini Treats

Treat yourself in small, joyful ways. Try a new tea or coffee blend, enjoy a favourite snack, or watch a movie you love. Get a massage or have a face mask. These little moments of pleasure remind your brain that life doesn’t have to wait for a holiday to be enjoyable.

  1. Connect With People

Even brief social interactions can boost your mood. Call a friend, meet someone for a casual coffee, or spend quality time with a loved one. Laughter and connection are powerful antidotes to post-holiday blues.

  1. Plan Something Fun

Having something to look forward to is a huge motivator. Plan a small weekend adventure, try a new hobby, or schedule a creative night in. Fun doesn’t need to be expensive or elaborate, it just needs to excite you a little.

  1. Practice Gratitude (Quick & Easy)

Even a one-minute reflection on what you’re grateful for can shift your perspective. Think about three things — big or small — that made you smile today. Pair this with a calming ritual like sipping tea, holding a crystal, or lighting a candle to make it more intentional.

  1. Give Yourself Permission to Rest

Finally, remember that it’s okay to feel a little blue after the holidays. Give yourself grace, enjoy small moments, and don’t pressure yourself to jump straight back into a full routine. Sometimes the best way to move forward is to pause first.

The post-holiday blues are temporary, and with a little playfulness, movement, and mindful joy, you can easily lift your energy and get you through January with positivity.

Love you, love me x
